A power morcellator is a surgical device used during laparoscopic gynecological
procedures, myomectomies and hysterectomies in order to remove uterine
fibroids. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced
in April 2014 that the use of power morcellation during these surgeries
could spread undetected cancer cells throughout the body, suggesting approximately
1 in 350 women who underwent hysterectomies or myomectomies using morcellators
had unsuspected cancerous tumors located in the uterine tissue.
How Does This Device Spread Cancer?
Manifesting during childbearing years, uterine fibroids are tissue growths
located inside the uterine wall. Approximately three out of four women
develop uterine fibroids during their lifetime, though most display no
symptoms. While size and severity vary from person to person, women who
do suffer significant problems need surgical removal.
Doctors typically recommend a minimal, invasive procedure to remove the
fibroids by using a power morcellator. The device shaves malignant uterine
tissue into small pieces, so it can be extracted through a small incision.
Unfortunately, when a patient has undiscovered cancer tissues in the fibroids,
this procedure spreads cancer cells into the abdomen and pelvis.
It’s imperative to understand that there is no reliable test to identify
cancerous tissue in uterine fibroids. However, undergoing an invasive
gynecological procedure may be the only way to locate malignant uterine tissue.
